Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) & GP Prescribing Guidance

Cwm Gwyrdd Medical Centre

2 Sept 2025

Welsh Government guidance

Dear Patients,

As of May 2025, Welsh Government guidance (WHC/2025/018) states that Mounjaro can only be prescribed for obesity through specialist Tier 3 weight management services. GP practices in Wales are not permitted to initiate Mounjaro for weight loss purposes.

Currently, GPs can only prescribe (tirzepatide) for patients with type 2 diabetes who have previously been treated with metformin and other glucose-lowering therapies, but still have uncontrolled HbA1c levels and must be started by hospital specialist in line with our local healthboard diabetes management protocol.

Patients interested in Mounjaro for weight loss may be referred to Tier 3 services via the All Wales Weight Management Pathway, based on BMI thresholds, relevant health conditions, and service availability. Please note that demand for these services is high and waiting times can be significant.

We encourage all patients to continue engaging with healthy lifestyle support, including dietary advice, physical activity, self-management resources, and formal weight management programs. We will keep you informed of any updates should national guidance or availability change.

Kind regards,

CGMC
